Annual Veterans Day Celebration

The Annual Veterans Day Celebration is sponsored by the Dayton American Legion Post 27.
2:00 pm: Parade
Help us line the streets to honor the veterans who have proudly served our country during war and peacetime.The parade will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Rockingham County Administration Building located at 20 East Gay Street, and will travel south on Main Street to the City Municipal Building.
Meet our Grand Marshal: Mitchell R. Griffith
Mitchell Griffith is a native of the Shenandoah Valley. In 1954, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Griffith was stationed in Georgia, Germany, Korea, Vietnam, Greenland, Virginia and Maryland during his service.
After serving 20 years in the Military, Griffith retired and decided to return "home" to the Valley where he accepted the position of Dayton Tour Sergeant. Under his leadership, a larger police force was established and he became Dayton's first Chief of Police.
In addition to serving his country, Griffith also served his community. He was a Dayton City Council Member for 4 years, and a field reprsentative for the Virginia Independent Automobile Dealers Association. He joined Dayton American Legion Post 277 and was very involved in the merging of Rockingham Post 27 and Dayton Post 277.
He is now a lifetime member of Datyon American Legion Post 27, VFW Post 632 and also Rockbridge Voiture of the 40/8.
Submit a Parade Entry:
We invite all clubs, civic organizations, companies, and individuals to submit an entry in the Veterans Day parade. Please fill out the Veteran's Day Entry Form by November 1, 2012 to participate. Applications must be mailed to 212 S. Main Street, Harrisonburg, VA 22801 or submitted via email to kim.kirk@harrisonburgva.gov.
3:00 pm: Veterans Day Ceremony
Location: Memorial Hall, 395 South High Street, Harrisonburg, VA
At 3pm, following the parade, there will be a brief ceremony at Memorial Hall. As part of the ceremony, the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center will present their Small Business Veteran of the Year Award.
4:00 pm: Veterans Day Concert Presented by the
Harrisonburg High School Music Department
Location: Memorial Hall, 395 South High Street, Harrisonburg, VA
Hear patriotic works from the Harrisonburg High School Symphonic Band and Honors Choir.
