Friendly Faces of the Friendly City: Mike McClurg, Harrisonburg Meet Up Host & Dominoes Expert

Join us as we talk to volunteer Meet Up host Mike McClurg about his experience starting and hosting downtown’s latest Meet Up event, Dominoes Night at Ruby’s Arcade!
Meet Mike
If you are looking for a fun, social way to meet new people, the bi-weekly Dominoes Night taking place at Ruby’s Arcade might be the perfect outing for you! Mike “Pips” McClurg, a volunteer with the local Dominoes Meet Up, shares why this classic game continues to bring people together.
Mike’s own journey with the game started in Arizona.
“I lived in an apartment and the couple there invited me and my wife over to play Dominoes.”
He kept going back until it eventually grew, and many new couples joined in and started making it into a potluck. He talked about how they would be laughing so much and how he loves getting to know people and their vibe and energy.
What makes Dominoes special?
For Mike, Dominoes is more than just a game, it’s a social experience.
“I love dominoes because it’s a great social game,” he says. “Anybody can play it. It takes a little time to learn, but it’s really easy. People get it real quick. You can talk and play at the same time, so it’s a great way to meet people and have fun!”
Community Vibe
The Dominoes Night Meet Up has gotten positive reception in the community.
"When I talk to people, they’re very excited about it. They kind of time and say ‘Hey, that’s a cool idea!’” Mike explains. “It’s something that I don’t think a lot of people play, so I think people were looking for a social activities, and its something that’s a little different.”
Why Ruby’s Arcade?
The venue is an important part of the experience. Ruby’s Arcade offers “excellent customer service, great food and drinks, and a laid back atmosphere,” Mike says.
“People of all ages come here. It’s a safe, family friendly environment.”
Ruby’s is a fun place where everyone is welcome and won’t feel out of place.
Looking Ahead
As the Dominoes Night Meet Up community grows, Mike envisions bigger events.
“Eventually, I’d like to host tournaments or even a league, like a bowling or dart league. Maybe even get sponsors for prizes. The goal is to have fun and have more people join!”

The Dominoes Night Meet Up at Ruby’s Arcade is open to all ages, free of charge, and runs from 6-8 p.m. every other Thursday. Ruby’s also offers happy hour specials for attendees, including discounted pizzas, and drinks.
“Plus, if you're playing Dominoes, you can get a wristband for free arcade games. So when you're done playing the dominoes, you can go in and play the games they have,” says Mike.
