People Behind the Presents: Lynn and Phil Adams, OASIS Fine Art & Craft

For 25 years, OASIS Fine Art and Craft has been a cornerstone of artistic expression in Downtown Harrisonburg. What began as a collective effort to bring local art into a shared space has grown into a vibrant community of creators, teachers, volunteers, and supporters who continue to help the storefront operate and support the artists on a day-to-day basis.

Today, OASIS remains a place where artists connect with one another and with the community, and where visitors can experience beautiful handmade work. We talked to two of OASIS’s artists, Lynn Adams and Phil Adams, about their experience as OASIS artists and a part of the Downtown Harrisonburg art and business community.

“I have only been a member of OASIS for nine months, but in this time, I have come to know so many artists and patrons who have been integral parts of our art community for decades. Their commitments to sharing not only their art but also sharing art with the community have been an inspiration,” said Phil Adams.

OASIS continues to promote the work of local artists, encourage creativity, and serve as a welcoming space for beginners and professionals alike. Reaching its 25th anniversary this year marks not only a milestone but a celebration for all the people that helped OASIS grow.

OASIS Fine Art & Craft’s Role

The role OASIS plays in the arts scene extends far beyond the walls of the gallery. Its members are involved in lots of different projects that supports the creative expression of the next generation.

“To me OASIS is a very central point for the downtown community. We are able to reach out to and connect in a very positive way to our community and beyond. OASIS is able to bring people together no matter their skills,” says Lynn Adams.

Phil adds that OASIS serves as an important teacher of art and inspiration throughout the valley. The youth programs in particular awakens creativity and builds confidence for those who participate.

Why OASIS Feels Different

Shopping at OASIS is unlike visiting a traditional retail store. Every piece is made by a local artist, and no two are alike. Visitors can learn about the materials, the process, and the intention behind the work. Many times the artist is the one greeting you at the desk.

Phil Adams says that “the items offered by OASIS are unique products unavailable anywhere else. The experience is enhanced by the artists themselves or docents familiar with the artists and their media.”

Meaningful Moments

The relationships formed inside OASIS go far beyond transactions. Lynn Adams describes how rewarding it is to help visitors find the perfect piece for a special occasion. Engaging in conversation, learning what the customer is seeking, and watching the moment of recognition when they spot the right item brings a deep sense of satisfaction. “I do hope that the experience will  be remembered for the next occasion that comes up for the customer and they return to Oasis confident they will find the perfect item again.”

Phil Adams recalls a memorable encounter with a young woman on the Harrisonburg Art Walk. What started as small talk revealed a shared history at a small mountain college near Asheville. She had been a member of the clogging team, and he had been a musician for the same group when it was founded in the mid-1970s. “Though we were at least two generations apart, it was heartwarming to discover we shared a special background. We could have easily passed on the street and never known, and we will probably never see each other again, but those few moments were pretty special!”

Gifting Advice

For visitors searching for a unique holiday gift, OASIS offers possibilities that simply do not exist in chain stores. Each artist creates something distinct, and every purchase comes with the opportunity to learn more about the craft behind it. Whether it is woodwork, jewelry, ceramics, textiles, or paintings, each piece reflects hours of practice, knowledge, and creativity.

Personal interactions with the community and the artists are what set OASIS apart from online retailers. One artist, Phil Adams, explains, “I try to create a shopping experience that reflects the values found here in the valley as well as OASIS. I want them to purchase a memory rather than ‘an item.”

The Downtown Connection

Being Part of Downtown’s Business Community

When customers choose to shop at OASIS, the impact is immediate and tangible. Their purchases support local artists, their families, and the vendors who supply materials. Their dollars also contribute to city and state tax revenues and help ensure that artists have a place to continue sharing their work.

The message to the community is simple. “Without local support, many talented artists and crafters would either have to move away from downtown markets or discontinue displaying their products,” says Phil Adams. Supporting local art helps preserve the creative spirit that makes Harrisonburg unique.

For artists who want to get involved in the downtown scene, the advice is straightforward.
“Just do it! Consult members of the gallery and come in. It is a welcoming community, and any fears will quickly dissipate, and you will become a member of a truly wonderful community!” - Phil Adams

The Downtown Spirit

The festive decorations around Downtown during the holidays bring them joy, and for many OASIS members, the Christmas Parade is a beloved tradition. “We enjoy the music from the bands. As well as seeing and catching up with old friends and family. It brings back memories of my own youth. It is the beginning of the Holiday season for me.”

OASIS members love exploring downtown during any season. Some of their favorite places include Wonder Skate Shop, The Tuning Fork Music Shop, Clementines, and Jack Brown’s.

Hopes for Downtown’s Future

As OASIS looks ahead, the goals are simple. Many artists hope to expand their offerings, grow their skills, and continue investing in their craft with new knowledge and equipment. They also want to see Harrisonburg grow while still holding on to its small-town charm, while continuing to welcome new dining and shopping experiences.
