Shop Smart, Shop Local: Your Downtown Harrisonburg Back-to-School Guide
Virginia's tax-free weekend is here — Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9 — and Downtown Harrisonburg is ready for it. Skip the sales tax, support local, and knock out your back-to-school list while you're at it. Several downtown shops are rolling out special events and deals just for the weekend.
Here's your practical guide to what qualifies, where to shop, and what's happening downtown.
First, the rules
During the holiday, these items are exempt from sales tax:
Clothing & footwear — $100 or less per item
School supplies — $20 or less per item
There's no limit on how many qualifying items you buy, and it applies both in-store and online as long as you purchase during the weekend. A few things that don't qualify: handbags, jewelry, cleated or protective athletic shoes, and computer hardware.
Tip: The price cap is per item, not per cart — so stock up.
