Nerd Nite HVA Edition

Nerd Nite is an international phenomena where people who have a particular expertise or passion for something offer a fun and entertaining presentation in a relaxed social setting.

It is educational but not a lecture. It is a laid-back and conversational. It is a spot for intellectually curious people who love learning about random interesting things.

We are excited to become an official Nerd Nite location in downtown Harrisonburg. During our first inaugural year (2026), we are going to host it at different venues on different nights of the week. You can see the full schedule down below.

Here’s What Nerd Nite Can Look Like…

The best way to catch the vibe of these talks is to see what others have done in other cities.

Is there a topic that you are particular passionate about and that you love “nerding out” on? Want to share your inner nerdiness with fellow community members? Please sign up to be a speaker for a future Nerd Nite in Downtown Harrisonburg.

Still need inspiration?

Here are a few presentations that have been delivered in other cities:

  1. The Tumultuous Past of Tetris (The Video Game)

  2. A history of the now-defunct Disney World 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Ride

  3. The Zoology of Dragon

  4. Murder and Merlot: The Truly Wild Story of the Gallos, The Franzias, and the Wine Empires Built during Prohibition

  5. Firefly Flirtation

  6. The Aesthetics, Eccentrics, and Excesses of Extreme Heavy Metal

  7. A Fungus Among Us

  8. A Way with Worms: how are polychaete worms so small yet so heavy metal at the same time

Nerd Nite FAQs

What do you need to do?

  •  Be a Nerd and fill out the speaker application form below.

  • Have a topic that is informative yet entertaining. You don’t need to be a stand-up comedian, but you should be able to deliver an engaging talk that is enjoyable and has a humorous vibe.

  • Topics can be almost any, nerdy, educational topic is fair game—science, art, culture. Just be passionate and knowledgeable about your topic.

  • Come up with a fun title and 3-5 sentence description.

  • Send us a 1-3 sentence bio.

  • Tell us your availability for the upcoming dates on our schedule.

  • Prepare an 18-21-minute presentation that is more images and visuals than tons of words on a slide. Make it conversational and light…please do not read from a script.

  • Show up, enjoy a beverage thanks to our host, share your expertise and passion with the audience, and have a blast!

  • Moderate Q&A.

  • Thank you profusely!

Nerd Nite Schedule

We invite you to attend a Nerd Nite. They are free (although you are encouraged to support the small business host and buy food and beverages) and will be a nerdy, good time.

Submit Your Topic for the next Nerd Nite.

Greetings, fellow Harrisonburg and Rockingham County Nerds! You have found your home for sharing a topic that you have an expertise in and/or passion and enthusiasm for!

Please fill out this form to pitch your idea for a fun and entertaining 15-20 minute talk (with presentation slides that are image-heavy). Talks should be conversations, enjoyable, and filled with as much irreverence and silliness as you want.

Topics don't have to be traditionally academic (history of fan fiction is just as appreciated as a talk about math or fungi). If your topic feels like a good fit, we will reach out to you and let you know the upcoming available dates so we can get your talk scheduled. Thank you!
